Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish.
Every once in a while I participate in this one when I either
1) Like the theme, and/or 2) Have the time!

This week's topic:
Throwback!!! I'm highlight ten fairy tale/mythology themed books I've discovered and fallen in love with during my time blogging that are NOT as well-known as other tales I love.

I review SO MANY books in these genres every year, and I always want to re-feature everything again during events! I can't, of course. But TTT helps a little!

In no particular order...

1) LOST VOICES by Sarah Porter

This is my favorite series featuring mermaids--and you know I've read a lot of these! It's darker and grittier and more wild, as mermaids in the wild would be. So many books have them overly sweet or super obsessed with humans. These mermaids want nothing to do with humans. There's also some great unique mythology blended in!

2) THE PRINCESS CURSE by Merrie Haskell

What happens when you mash up The Twelve Dancing Princesses, Beauty and the Beast, and add a dash of Persephone and Hades? THIS BOOK. It may sound like it doesn't go together, but IT DOES. And it's brilliant. And I want a sequel, goshdarnit, because I STILL can't say goodbye to these characters! ^.~

3) The Once Upon a Curse Series by Kaitlyn Davis

I  love how this meshes our reality with fairy tales. WITHERING ROSE is especially innovative in that instead of a heart, there is literally a ROSE that withers away as the main character uses magic due to a curse!! Kaitlyn Davis is a gem of an indie author and her books are worth checking out!!

4) MIDNIGHT MASQUERADE by Marci Lynn McClure

I really like how this uses the tale off the Twelve Dancing Princesses as a backdrop, but the main character is not one of the twelve.  And the romance? *swoon* I wish the author would release more fairy tales like this one!! Great indie title!!

5) KILL ME SOFTLY by Sarah Cross

At first, I completely overlooked this title. The cover and title do NOT make me think fairy tales. Then it was on a couple of Best of the Year lists. I looked into it, and fell in love after reading PAGE ONE because oh my goodness, that hook!! I need a lot more books from this author set in this world!!!

6) SHADOWS ON THE MOON by ZoĆ« Marriott

For a while, this was available in the US, but now you have to import the UK edition from Book Depository. But it's not expensive and now you get this incredible new cover!!! This is
Cinderella like you've never seen her before! The book is dark and gritty and inspired by Japan and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!
MY REVIEW

7) THE WIDE-AWAKE PRINCESS by E.D. Baker

What happens when your sister is cursed to prick her finger on a spinning wheel and put the entire kingdom to sleep? When you're born, you AREN'T given magical gifts. Your gift is that magic doesn't affect you. Which isn't fun AT ALL. Until you're the only one oblivious to the sleeping curse. Now you get to be the hero and save the day!!! This book is adorable and I loved it so much!!!

8) SOLSTICE by P.J. Hoover

Just when you think you're done with dystopian/ post-apocalyptic books, there comes one that mixes global warming with the tale of
Persephone and Hades. This started out indie, then got picked up and released by a  publishing house so that more people could be introduced to its greatness!!

9) VALIANT by Sarah McGuire

A genderbent retelling of The Valiant Little Tailor? Who could say no? I loved how this female used her smarts in a world that is stacked against her and became successful. Sadly, publisher Egmont folded right around publication, which damaged the book's launch!

I haven't reviewed this yet!? How did that happen? Well, for now, Check out My interview with Sarah McGuire!

9) BETWEEN THE SEA AND SKY by Jaclyn Dolamore

I love how this is a retelling of The Little Mermaid, but also NOT. Readers are introduced to traditional fantastic creatures in new and innovative ways. This world feels different and discovering it is a gorgeous adventure. Thid book solidified my love for Jaclyn Dolamore!!!

10) FAIREST OF THEM ALL by Carolyn Turgeon

It was hard choosing between this and MERMAID and GODMOTHER. Carolyn Turgeon takes familiar stories and twists then inside out so that you see the tale's underbelly like never before. I was lucky enough to meet the author a few years ago when she was writing this one. When she whispered that it was about Rapunzel growing up to become Snow White's stepmother, I knew I needed this book in my life sooner rather than later!!
