I adore recommending The 39 Clues series to kids--especially to reluctant readers! I think the series appeals to both types of readers. For fans of reading, they're immediately sucked into the fast-paced story and want to solve the mystery. For readers who struggle more, that fast pace keeps them turning pages to see what's next. (This is why I also love to recommend James Patterson to reluctant readers. His chapters are always super short and make you want to keep going!)

The books all come with cards (Pokémon/Yu-Gi-Oh! style) that interact with an online website, creating a story that engages on multiple formats. If kids aren't into reading because they'd rather play video games, introduce them to the series by talking about this game format! Each book also has a clue hidden within it for you to decipher, which can appeal to both reluctant readers and fanatical readers alike. For example, the first book, THE MAZE OF BONES, has a bunch of pages that start going out of order--the numbers form a clue to decipher!

If they're into reality TV shows such as The Amazing Race, that's another angle to use to get them reading!!!

The series also has short books, so reluctant readers look at it and think, "It's short! I can do this!!" It's not daunting to them the way a bigger book may be. Of course, that short length is deceptive, because the series is subliminally teaching readers a LOT about history. Siblings Amy and Dan Cahill are related to a LOT of famous people, and in each book, they go around looking for the clue left behind by their famous ancestor. They're related to Benjamin Frankin, Wolfgang Mozart, Amelia Earhart, Nelson Mandela, and more. Kids learn SO MUCH reading these books, and they have a more sophisticated vocabulary (Apartheid, anyone?). The reading level begins around fourth grade, but goes all the way up into middle school, and appeals to so many kids!

Scholastic was really smart about the way it drew in future readers, too. If a kid is new to reading or wants suggestions for what to read next, they have a ton of options if they're into The 39 Clues. The publisher hired several best-selling kids authors to write the various books in the series. So if a kid reads THE MAZE OF BONES by Rick Riordan, they may choose to seek out his other books, such as THE LIGHTNING THIEF. Gordon Korman, Margaret Peterson Haddix, David Baldacci, and Linda Sue Park are just a few of the authors readers can move on to if they want a new book to read! They just enjoyed one book by that author, so why not try another, right??

While The 39 Clues is a series that will appeal to many kids, I especially recommend giving it to a reluctant reader. You trick the kids into LEARNING while they're having FUN reading and playing the game, so it's a win/win for all!
