How I Came Up with the Idea for NISSA
by Bethany Lopez

How I came up with the idea for NISSA:

I came up with the idea for NISSA while sitting in the waiting room at the doctor’s office in Nov 2011.
I took some notes on my phone:

-            Teenaged Fairy Godmother
-            Mission is a bullied teen
-            Fairy falls for her mission’s older brother
-            Love determined by Fate

After that, I wrote the first five chapters and took them with me to the Southern California Writer’s Conference. I took the pages with me to the Rogue Critiques. What this is, is a meeting at 9 pm, with a group of writers and one moderator. The moderator for my group was Romance Writer Laura Taylor. She had us submit the first five pages, she read them aloud to the group, then we all gave a critique.

I was terrified. I wasn’t sure if it was a good idea or not, and I wanted to get some feedback before I continued writing the story. The feedback was good. They thought my idea was an original one and they gave me some great advice on how to make it better. Still, I put it aside and didn’t finish the first draft until Camp NaNoWriMo in June.

I loved the world building aspect of Nissa's story. I enjoyed researching fairies, forests, and magic. I really wanted to make the story believable, but magical at the same time.

I had more beta readers on this book than all of my other books combined I think, lol. All in all it took me a year and a half from idea to publication. I love the feel of NISSA. I think it is a light, fun, and uplifting story.
