Guest Post: Sarah Porter, author of LOST VOICES

For two weeks, come celebrate mermaids, whether it’s winter or summer where you live. Splash into Summer runs from June 28th to July 12th. There will be author interviews, guest posts, giveaways, reviews, and more! Now is the time to celebrate mermaids, especially with so many new novels about them coming out.

Today, Sarah Porter has stopped by A Backwards Story to celebrate the book birthday of her debut novel, LOST VOICES. Sarah did an interview back in April for Fairy Tale Fortnight that’s not to be missed! Don’t forget to check out my review of this fabulous novel or miss your chance to win a copy!

LOST VOICES is now available for purchase wherever books (and e-books) are sold!

On Mermaids
Sarah Porter

Mermaids offer the image of a divided nature.

Think of yourself at work, at school, maybe even with friends or family members who understand you to some extent, but not completely. In so many areas of our lives, we can show only part of who we are. Our deeper thoughts, passions, and impulses often have to stay hidden. These secret aspects of our personalities remain under the water’s surface, glinting and waving.

This is why mermaids have such poignancy. Half human, half publicly visible, but also half sub-aquatic, slippery, inhuman, secretive, and graceful.

And mermaids aren’t only the perfect image of the split between our public and our private selves. They also embody the limits of self-knowledge. For every conscious thought that occurs to us, another quick-finned thought remains beneath the waves. Unconscious ideas might flicker and hint at themselves, they might even surface in our dreams or in unguarded moments. But in so many ways we are our own uncharted territory, our own profound seas.

Check out the fantastic trailer for LOST VOICES. It makes me want to read this book all over again!

  1. I loved the trailer, I've been trying to figure out how to make one of my own. This one is really good.

  2. Yeah, I thought the trailer was great too. I'll be showing this one to the students. =)

I hope I'm not turning into some weird stalker with Sarah Porter and Lost Voices. I just loved that book! BTW, the new cover was great. I loved the shimmery mermaid.

  3. @Lena: I'm no good at making trailers. I won't even try when my time comes. Someone else is better at it than I am!

@Flashhlight Reader: Isn't it fabulous? I want to be a mermaid...but maybe in one of the less-catty clans! I know, right? I hope Sarah doesn't think I'm stalking her, either! I'm such a cheerleader for this book, though...
